Castle Rushen has stood guard over Castletown for more than 800 years and is considered one of the best-preserved medieval castles anywhere in Europe — largely because it was in continuous use, first as a royal residence, later as a courthouse, and even as the island’s prison until the 1890s. Climb the towers for sweeping views over the harbour and the old capital’s narrow streets, and look out for the clock on the castle wall, a gift from Elizabeth I in 1597 that’s still keeping time today. Inside, the rooms are furnished to give a real sense of what life was like for the Stanleys and Murrays who once lived and ruled from here. It’s a short, flat walk from anywhere in Castletown — genuinely one of the easiest heritage sites on the island to fit into a day. Combine it with a coffee in the square or a walk along the quay afterwards. Best visited mid-morning before the coach groups arrive, and note it can be busy during TT fortnight when Castletown fills up. Managed by Manx National Heritage.
