Bar George sits just off Douglas’s main run of restaurants, in the old financial quarter on Hill Street, and it’s become one of our go-to suggestions for guests who want a proper drink without queueing for it. The wine list is genuinely well chosen rather than just long, with a good spread by the glass, and the small plates menu is designed for grazing rather than a full sit-down meal — perfect if you’ve already eaten or fancy something lighter to go with the wine. The room itself is intimate, a little dressed-up without trying too hard, and it fills up steadily through the evening rather than all at once, so a 7pm arrival usually gets you a good table without a booking. It’s an easy five-to-ten-minute walk from most of the Douglas apartments, tucked just back from the Promenade, so no need to worry about taxis home. Go later in the week if you want a livelier room, or midweek if you’d rather talk over your wine than shout over it. A solid, grown-up option for an evening that doesn’t need to end in a nightclub.
